“At age 7, my family and I emigrated from Vietnam to Canada. At age 12, I realized my sexuality. At age 28, I finally had the courage to come out.”
This series of experimental photography is an artistic interpretation of a turbulent period in the artist's life: from a young child up until recently. The concepts of this photography series provided the backbone for Duong’s debut body painting performance ‘Turbulence’ at the Concept Space in 2017, followed by ‘Rise’ at the Streatham Space Project in 2018. In line with his abstract paintings, Duong’s performances explore themes of his personal identity, migration, sexuality and human relationships. The artist is drawn to physicality of the performance; the intimacy and interaction of skin with canvas and paint are explored. The results have an unsettling quality and intense yet transient nature.
